Spotlight on Sunflowers

These tall and colorful blooms have a way of instantly upping our mood. Here are a few fun facts about our favorite sunny stem:

  • Sunflowers are native to the Americas and have been cultivated since 3000 BC.
  • Sunflowers exhibit a unique trait called heliotropism, which means the sunflower always keeps its face turned toward the sun. Each blooms starts the day facing east and ends at sunset facing west.
  • The sunflower is the state flower of Kansas.
  • Sunflowers typically grow between 5 and 12 feet tall.
  • The current world record for the tallest sunflower was set in Germany in 2014—a towering 30 feet, 1 inch tall!
